Default exhaust toy...

Whilst looking over the internets...I came across this..

http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/QTEC/index.php

would you have to re-tune for it?
or tune for either open or closed??

You would probably be able to gain MORE HP if you re-tuned it, but I would Imagen that it would net you some hp as it is making the exhaust more free flowing.

I don't understand 1 thing about this product though:
Woudn't it be smart to block the normal exhaust route instead of just opening another hole. seems like it would be a little more efficient to me.

i have been researching these extensively. With my turbo and AEM EMS, there is a Nitrous function that can switch maps on the fly... THe problem with the electronic valves, are two fold. One they will eventually start to leak and when you open them up, at least with my stock exhaust, they can make your turbo increase boost at least 8-10 pounds. Now this isnt a bad thing, especially if your ready for it, but if your not, and am in the wrong map, you will run super lean.
If you run the cut out, you will have to be redynoed, running it closed at WOT will make it run really rich though, if you havent changed the map... Trust me i was really gung ho for this, especiialyl because i could keep my quiet exhaust when i was cruising, then open it up when i wanted to play.

Also if your not retuned, your probably going to loose some hp / tq. I unbolted my exhaust (for sh*ts and giggles) and I definatly lost horsepower and torque running an open downpipe. It did sound cool though

I have a friend that has that on his new z06. His is also remote controlled. When the cars at idle and he's standing outside and hits the button, the sound becomes incredible. I don't know how much it helps out his car but he seems to think it's a noticable amount.

I'll ask him if he did any other things to make it work well or ran a b4 and after dyno with it.

the stock Z06 exhaust system comes with a valve control already... it opens the exhaust when the driver goes WOT. Maybe he did some y pipes under the car when he's just cruising?

I quoted him what soul coughing wrote. We'll see what he answers.
Here's what he said so far.

On my turbo car, I gained a lot by playing with the exhaust and dropping reversion/backpressure. On a stock C5 cutouts might only pick up 10 to the wheels, if you're lucky. Most people do them for sound."

Here's his reply
yup... virtually every electric cutout I've seen will eventually leak some. lots of NA guys put high temp RTV around the blade to help seal it, but this may not work well for a turbo app.

if your turbo system cannot control boost between open and closed position of the cutout I definitely would not install one unless you are fully tuned for it.

in my case, once I get off my lazy ass, I will have a full 2 bar volumetric efficiency tune to work with and my car can boost early or late and fueling will be correct. for overboost I have a few tricks up my sleeve that will get boost back under control and prevent detonation.

I don't know if I am going to go the cutout route or do something else but I want to break the 800rwhp mark just to prove that I can and I may need some exhaust tweaks to make it happen.

not that the car will be any faster with the extra power, I just want to see if I can build and tune my car to that point.

Here's the guy with the new ZO6

i actually lost a little performance with them opened at lower rpms(talking below 3000rpms. the nice thing about my setup is that they would open up automatically, the only down side is there was no way for me to keep them closed at higher rpm's to actually tell what kind of performance gain they were giving me

Soul Coughing knows his shit.

If opening up a cutout causes your boost to increase 8-10 psi (which I have never seen happen), then your wastegate isn't doing its job at all.
