Default FI tuning

ive been tuning my car n/a for almost a year, tweaking timing, a/f as ive added parts on the car. im thinking about attempting to tune my car FI and if i dont seem comfortable i'de let my friend tune it. i've never experienced any knock on my tune running about 12.5-13 a/f wot with 26 degrees timing around 8000rpm WOT.

of course if i attempt this ide make the base map very rich and retard the timing quite a bit up top and make little pulls slowly enough to get it up in the rpms safely with no knock count and low boost levels. keep in mind ill only be going for 7psi so.

im not an experienced tuner by any means but i think i have the competence to understand and learn to tune my own maps. and comments or flaming welcome let me know what you think...... also what kinda timing are you boosted guys on stock compression 5-8k???? thanks!!!!

I think on the stock compression, pump gas and 7 psi, at 5000 rpm or where ever full boost comes on, timing should be around 10-12 deg and slowly work its way up to about 16-17 deg at 7500-8000 rpm and hold there to 9000 rpm.

thanks !!!!! do you tinker with your map at all or you just know your stuff? cruising 3-4k low fuel maps timing should be closing to stock timing considering if your not boosting while cruising, right?

i have flashpro and they have a base map for the id1000 injectors i ordered..... so i figured i couldjust tune from that base map as i have tuned my car n/a from a "stock tune" map which can be downloaded for the flashpro and definately felt gains.

Yeah, agreed. I think you are running too much timing and I concur with Spoolin. I just ran a brutal week of track days running my CTSC setup at 10psi. Timing @ peak boost/rpm is about 17 degrees. The motor was dead reliable and felt awesome right up to the last session when I money shifted...hehe

is 17 degrees safe for pump gas?! should it be better with 16 or even 15 to be safer?!

I'm running 17 degrees on pump 91 at peak...but I'm also at 5000ft of altitude. I haven't had so much as a hiccup. Sure, pulling a little timing is safer...almost always, right?

For such a low boost, 7-10 psi, 17 deg of timing at the top should be just fine. Hell, I had mine at 16 deg of timing at the top on 93 pump gas when I was at 17 psi of boost and making 465 whp on my old 60-1 turbo, but at full boost hit it was around 5 deg of timing and thats because I was running much more boost than 7-10 psi. With the lower boost as youre running, 17 deg of timing at the top will be plenty safe and having it start at around 10-12 deg at full boost hit will be just fine. I know a little about how the timing should be from the years of talking with my tuner, looking at my timing map and watching it being tuned.

Its kind of hard to explain on here and give you the exact timing numbers, but at WOT, the timing map while not in boost should be similar to NA numbers and as boost starts to come in, timing starts to drop. Timing will slowly drop down as boost comes in and as full boost hits it will be at around 10-12 deg (being that youre only on 7 psi) and then slowly go back up to a peak timing of around 16-17 deg at around 7500-8000 rpm and hold there to redline.

thanks for the advice, i feel much more confident in tuner it myself now! i will just be street tuning it at first until i have some moiney to hit the dyno so i will run the timing a little conservative, keep my a/f wot 12-12.5, and watch for knock and i should be good for 350 to the wheels with a conservtive tune i would hope.

It would be safer to keep your A/F at around 11.5 under full boost and WOT. this will keep the cylinders a little cooler or the EGT's down a bit.
