Are the sleeves pre-cut or can they be cut to fit? Maybe I will go that route instead of the gold tape.

And you can pull the thread off and split it if need be and wrap it around what you want and use safety wire or something to hold in on if you cant slip it over the hose or whatever youre covering. I did this when using it to wrap the wiring flex loom up around the fuse box and crossmember but I used tie wraps to hold it on with no problems. You can also cut it to the desired length if you chose and if you dont find the correct length you need.

which one protects better?

right now I have it wrapped with thermal wrap but I heard the gold is better than thermal wrap...
is the silver better than the gold?

Look at the ratings I think the Gold is the best, but I doubt either will work any better than the other. With the price, I'm looking for better alternatives, seems your more paying for bling than anything. I'm going to home depot to check out cheap alternatives.
