You'll be fine even if you break and axle. Unless you have a spool the car won't jerk one way or another.

Believe me, I've brook dozens of axles over the years (from a launch, going into 2nd, and going into 3rd), with a spool, LSD, and open diff. The only scary one is when you have a spool.

If you do end up launching, and you get wheel hop, just let off the gas. That'll break any axle

That's the only thing that comes to mind when I hear the word spool. Not needles and thread....haha.

If you break an axle with a spool, 100% of the power will go to the other tire.

A spool is a solid one piece unit that goes in place of the diff. This is only used on drag cars that are NOT street driven.

I know coming from the FWD market, guys that were breaking axles at the track and a good alignment fixed the issue.

Anytime the axles aren't straight out of the diff/tranny and comes out at an angle due to a lowered car, tire sizes/etc it places undue stress on the axles and it's more prone to failure.

Of course wheel hop and the driver are the biggest factors.

From my experience there is only 2 times that the axles break during a launch or between gears with a hard shift. Any other time is just chance from defective parts or wear and it could happen to anyone. In our cars with IRS and ball and socket half shafts there is a very small chance that if the shaft breaks it can lock up the wheel or cause unrecoverable damage.

The last axle I broke was in my Vette, I was running a Dana 44 which was coupled to the wheels via a 3.5" aluminum half shaft and U- joints. I got a good launch and when I went 1st to 2nd I felt something strange but kept the pedal down, then when I hit 3rd the shaft let go, only it did not break it twisted like a barber pole. This sucked the rear tire into the car and shot me towards the wall. Somehow I was able to get control but I just barely missed my date with the concrete barrier.
