I've been doing some research when it comes to turbo s2000s, and what transmission to use. I was wondering if the PPG helical syncro gearset would be a viable option for a street car making less then 600hp. I have my heart set on the Ptuning turbo kit, and I doubt I would want a bigger turbo then the gtx3076r because I want a healthy balance of response and power. I understand that swapping a 2j/350z transmission may be a better option, but I want to retain the shifter feel of the s2000. (If that makes any sense)

I wouldn't be tracking the car at all. The car will primarily be a weekend toy. No drag radials, so definitely limited power on the street. I hope I'm not making it sound like I'm asking you to look into the crystal ball, but is what I'm trying to plan to do a viable option that won't break constantly? I understand that modifying anything makes it have a greater potential to break, but would the PPG gearset do what I'm asking it to do successfully?

I've heard someone named S2King (IIRC) broke into the 9s with the PPG gears, but I doubt I'd put enough power in my s2000 to do that, even if I was at the drag strip. By the sound of that alone, I have some confidence that what I'm trying to do may hold up. Maybe I missed some posts, but I haven't seen a lot of people run these gears. Maybe it's that crazy pricetag!

 

I looked into the PPG gearset but you still use Honda synchro's which are weak so ended up with a quaife gearbox instead

Stock box case is weak sauce. It will flex and eat your pretty and expensive gears. It's unfortunately not viable. T56 or v160. Or just shift normal and no clutch dumps.

 

I have lost second gear twice at 440bhp, don't drag race and don't smash gears in. Both times was second gear and it went as it got on to full boost, both times we suspect was synchro's that's why I didn't opt for PPG

 

I believe Honda has updated their second gear set multiple times. I replaced mine 2 years ago and the teeth looked different than the stock gear set.

 

But doesn't 2nd gear fail because the case deflects, not just that the gears themselves weren't strong enough?

 

Is it a pain in the butt to drive a quaife on the street?


That's unfortunate to hear. No way to strengthen the stock case, or is that asinine to even consider?

 

I've never seen any 1st hand accounts or pics of broken cases, just interwebz hearsay.

 

Either way, I think I'm going to chance it, and keep a close eye on transmission fluids. I wouldn't be above 500hp at first anyway, nor would I be abusing the car at the track at all. The only reason I was thinking ~500ish horsepower is if I ever run a fuel better then 93, but if I ever do, it won't be for a while.

Edit: I ran across this post, and it makes me feel better about the PPG gears seeing as this user is well over what my power goals would be. I wouldn't run dog engagement, but PPG gears were on the list to research.
