Default K&N Filter for Comptech SC

I know I've heard of someone replacing the blue foam filter with a K&N. I looked into it today and the Comptech filter has a 5 1/2 inch opening. K&N do a 5 and a 6 inch that fit in the stock box (just). I bought the 6 and intend to glue some rubber strip (1/4" thick) around the inside.

What have others done?

Be careful with the gluing idea.. that rubber strip will cause a lot of trouble if all or part gets ingested. Usually not recommended.

Anyone?

The rubber spacer will be a ring with an inner diameter of 5.5 inches and an outer diameter of 6 inches. It'll be well and truly glued before placement and will fit around the intake horns outer edge.

I'm pretty sure it will be OK, I'd just like to know what others have done.

Most have just continued to use the Comptech filter which is a perfectly good washable foam filter.

It broke!

Seriously, I can't believe a tinkerer like you would ask a question like that!

I'm not a big fan of oil soaked foam filters. They are messy, restrictive and deteriorate over time. A good K&N not only works better but is easier to maintain. That's just IMNSHO.

I agree. But when I get dyno prints of 135Kw I guess I start clutching at straws. Sometimes my enthusiasm out steps my monetary sense.

That said, they did throw in a whole lotta K&N stickers!

You can fit a K&N RF-1048 even though it has a 1/2" larger inner diameter. I McGyver'ed mine by adding a thick layer of black electrical tape to the tube that it clamps on to, so that the filter fits snug when you tighten the supplied clamp. If you like, you can cut the hole on the box so that the intake can fit inside with the black tape and all. Or you can just be lazy and slide the pipe in from the inside of the box. And voila! You have a K&N filter in your comptech box! The lid closes barely, but safely, by the way!
