You read the directions? It's 9 steps. And if you don't do it right you'll have broken parts, and oil leaks.

My car was tracked repeatedly with the Vortech, on a stock 5" pulley.

I believe the directions are posted above...you snug the 4 bolts first before any other bolts on the bracket. "lightly snug"

Not some increasing torque sequence like a HG install or anything.

Or is there another part with tq numbers? It says to repeat at the bottom?

My point is that these are parts that have failed on some kits, not all, and the guy installing the bolt is the biggest variable. ( I installed the 1 kit I'm talking about all but 1 time)

It's a pretty bold statement to declare a defect when many have had no issues.
Please stop perseverating on the use of the word Defect.

The point of the thread is not to make "bold statements". The point is to help people plan for potential future areas of failure which have occurred to many others, and which may well occur to them. The info should be of particular interest to those who have purchased used kits, as you correctly noted that introduces many unknown variables. Your advice would seem to be "take a chance" and hope that everything goes well. I am trying to offer useful info which largely eliminates the importance of all these random/unknowable variables.

Again, I do not want this to degenerate into the area in which you are taking the thread. There are *many* threads to post in if you wish to debate the overall merits of the Vortech.

You have posted useful info: One kit, of which you are aware and did the install, has not failed over the course of 4 installs.

Thank You. Now let's please try to get back on topic.

I haven't even begun to denigrate this thread.... As the moderator of this forum since it's inception I can pee in whatever thread I like here.

You titled a thread with the statement "Known Vortech Defects", not issues. It should be titled "Known Vortech Issues".

I added more info that is relevant to the topic. As well as stated it's not a defect when the installer screws it up, which can and will happen. If you don't like others adding information I don't understand why you posted it.

Here is Sideway's thread where he admits to giving people a hard time about over-tightening only to find a broken bolt himself. Granted he is not at stock boost levels. However, many at 7psi have had them break including myself.

Casterdog also posts up that he broke vtec bolts and idler pulley. Definitely an issue.

Thanks so much. Your input is appreciated.

I now intend to remove and reinstall the bracket using the proper sequence and with all new fasteners in the hope that I can duplicate your positive experience with a kit that, thus far, has proven to be rather troublesome for me (and, it appears, many others as well).

I also saw where, in Sideway's thread, you posted - and thus surely must have been aware of the problem. Jesus - if Phil can screw up the install, then I'll put my faith in the Titanium bolts which are resistant to such human imperfection!

Here are the results of the poll in that thread back in 2006:

No broken bolts, checked today [21.74%]
Yes I have broken the bolt(s) [34.78%]
No, I have not checked [30.43%]
Yes, I broke the idler pulley bolt [4.35%]
Yes, I broke the idler pulley bolt and Vtec solonoid bolts too. [8.70%]

That's over 1 in 3. Sorry - but maybe defect was the proper term? Who cares...

the longer a bolt gets, the easier it is to overtighten and break. Pretty simple, but it's an easy fix seems like. If someone lets Vortech know, I'm sure they will address the situation.

I thought you stripped that bolt, not broke it.

Now I have much bigger problems. Seems someone stripped out the bolt hole on the large m10x1.25x115 bolt which holds on the factory idler pulley on the Vortech kit.
