Default Laskey engine / Port Flow head

Hey everyone-

Just figured I would post this up...

I jus got my car back from the mechanic/tuner last night. I was running a stock head/block, at 7psi. We dropped in a Laskey Racing 9:1 block and a Port Flow head (exhaust valves 1mm over, intake valves stock sized). We also wired up my GM 3BAR MAP sensor, and threw a 1BAR spring in the wastegate.

A few things I have noticed...
1) This engine is a good bit louder than stock, valves especially. I am assuming the increase in valve noise is due to the double titanium valve springs... they really pop those valves shut.
2) With the lowered compression, if feels like some of the sensitivity has been taken out of idle-response... Stock, it was really touchy with my 11# flywheel... not as bad now.
3) This thing pulls like a FREIGHT TRAIN! I am running Nitto 555's on the rear (I think that is the tire... I will check over lunch). I am now able to light up the rear tires from a brake-boostd 3rd gear roll. Could not do tht before! I am running 255/35/18's in the rear... Time for some Mickey Thompsons (or maybe a set of hoosiers for the stock rears I have sitting in the garage)!

The car is on a basic tune until the guy gets back from vacation (he tuned it uber conservative until we can get some dyno time... idling @11.8, WOT drops to 11.3). We also installed an AEM oil pressure sensor and EGT sensor. They are all installed, but still need to be PIN'd into the EMS and setup within the serial gauges.

We hope to hit the dyno on Jan 3/4. I will post numbers then.

Cheers!

John

How much did you pay for the titanium valve springs?

Yeah, the idle is stupid rich. He just took 30 minutes and modified the timing table for the lowered compression. We are going to get into the tuning specs when he gets back. We will shoot for a 14-14.5 idle, 11.5-11.8 on high load, and 13.5 for highway/light load cruising.

As far as the springs, they came with he head (bough the entire longblock used from member jbotstein1... parted out through afwfjustin). I believe Nitride coated valves, double titanium springs are included in Port Flows standard Honda Head Work ($1500 new for all the work). They are Port Flow's brand springs. I believe they also sell Supertech and Ferrea brands as well...

Good to know. I just saw "Port flow" as the name of the springs on their site.

Does rev have a decent reputation? (Not ferrea, but not crap, right)?

that is one badass motor. if i ever needed one, hes the guy i am calling.

as for your high load aim, let the dyno tell you what to aim for. i have learned that you will know 100% what is best for power trying different afr at wot.

good luck cant wait to hear back with results.

and ditto on idle, thats retarded rich. when car warms up ok, can be rich, but once warm, thats foul plugs rich. have him fix that crap!

^ Yeah, the tune from HP Performance for the stock compression engine was idling at 10.9-11.2. I have been running on that tune daily driven since April, and have not had any issues with the plugs thus far, so I think they will make it another week-10 days til we can get to the dyno... I am running NGK3330 copper plugs.

He is out of town, so the AFR's will be addressed when he gets back.

As far as tuning, we are shooing for 11.5-11.8 under high load situations. He told me he does not feel comfortable going any higher than 12.0, because at that level a bad batch of gas could create some issues... This is a daily driven street car.

And this was one of the last engines built be Earl, himself, before he passed.

i meant you might make more power at 11.0:1 worth trying.

you might get a surpirse.

it all depends on where you're reading the A/F ratio from. the sniffer on the dyno is anywhere from .5 to 1 point leaner from what the A/F ratio number is on the header / downpipe. if you've got the AEM with the built in wideband you'll notice that the nunber is richer at that sensor than the dyno's sniffer. I prefer to just go by AEM's wideband and tune off of that. the location is more accurate and is always on the car.

if your tuner is tuning for 11.8 based on the dyno's sniffer at the muffler then that's like tuning for 11-11.3 from the wideband sensor up front. either way whatever number makes the most safe power is the magic number to use the Laskey motors are great, my buddy just got one for his civic, let us know what you put down once it's on the dyno!
