Negative effects of doing this?
What are the negative effects of putting one of these breather filters directly onto the front crankcase vents that is normally ran to the intake tube? This would be opposed to leaving it attached or running it to a vented oil catch can (wouldn't this basically be the same?).

I understand the emissions standards and such regarding it... I just wanted to make sure I wasn't unknowingly doing something harmful. Will the filter become saturated with oil that would have otherwise been sucked into the intake and burned off? Will I see any oil collecting or dripping from the filter? Will this cause additional sludge or general goopyness in my crankcase?

No, I was not planning on doing that. I may move to a catch can setup off my PCV sometime later, but for now all I was wanting to do is NOT run the front vent hose to my intake tube. I picked up one of those little filters from Autozone and pushed it on. Good to go. Thanks for the help all. Here is a picture of my new setup, mini filter and all.
my opinion is, over time, enough oil vapor will come out of there to start making your engine bay sticky/messy so it's better to just run it to a vented catch can (filled with steel wool to further catch the oil vapor). Also, I would run a line from the pcv to the can as well and cap off the nipple on the intake. It's how I've ran it on my car with no issues for over a year now.
