Newb questions on SC -
OK, so I've had my 2003 S2K for just over a year now. I love it. Coming from the sport motorcycle world, I'm new to the entire car thing, so please pardon the newbie questions.. but I do have a real kick for things that go fast.
Purchased the car dead stock from a 61 y/o accountant, I've added a K&N FIPK intake, T1R 70R-EM Sparrow Dual Exhaust, just ordered the high flow cat from Berk, and have been reading this FI thread a bit as of late. The idea of adding a supercharger to my S intrigues me...
What's it like?
Can a guy that's handy do this himself? (I saw some FAQ's - would like to know others experiences).
How does it sound?
What about wear & tear on trans, diff?
When driven around as a DD like a normal human being, what type of mileage will I get?
Would this give a stock 911 a run for it's money? Not asking if I'd pull away - just, would I keep up?
Any reasons why it's not a good idea?

Have you used the search yet?
There is one of these questions about every week. The answer to all your questions is it depends.
What type of supercharger? What boost? Most centrifugal superchargers feel just like a regular S just a whole lot faster.
Can one person put one on yes. How good are you with tools? Do you own a lot of them? Are you mechanically inclined? You have to answer those questions before we can tell you if you can install one yourself.
Gas milage out of boost will be no different. In boost it will go down.
Reason not to get one? Money it takes a lot to go FI. You have a clutch that will handle the power? Have you beefed up our diff. You said you have been looking at this forum. Most of these questions have been answered before.

A base Centrifugal SC kit such as the Vortech, Comptech, SOS will give you about 280whp at roughly 6psi. They are complete 100% bolt in kits that you could do over a weekend if your savvy. You don’t need to add a clutch or beef anything up at this stage. Its enough to "keep up" but if your like the other 95% of us, it will just wet your palate for more. Then it becomes how much more can you afford to spend.
Once you get up to about 10psi 350whp or more, you will need to start thinking about clutches. Diff’s and tranny’s will take the power if your polite. Over 450whp you can start braking things, that’s a whole other level in this car and more money will dictate your reliability, but as always the user dictates a fare bit on how long your drivetrain will last.

i'd say it's regular + super vtec (comptech/centrifugal type). the base kit lets you mechanically tune with an adjustable rising rate fuel pressure regulator (rather than a standalone/injectors). all you do is turn the nut to add more fuel flow/make it richer. used vortech/comptech kits can be had for under $3k. if you're more of a stoplight driver, then maybe 4.77s could be a fun alternative mod to have for yourself too ($1k).

keep up? if you let off the gas yes the 911 can keep up.

With enough boost you'll be keeping up with unmodded Turbos.
