Default Oil in charge pipes

Just wondering if any one else with a Garrett BB turbo has had oil past the seals? My charge pipes and most likely intercooler have a ton of oil in them and the compressor housing it self has so much oil that it drips on to the cross member. What would cause this? Turbo only has 1800 or so miles on it.

Hmmm... my turbo also has a little bit of oil coming out of the compressor, its not like you are describing, but it does have some oil around the silicone coupler. My friend told me that a little bit of oil is normal though.

Are you guys using a restrictor in the oil feed line?

Yeah, I've been running a restrictor.

Yes, I also have a restrictor. I agree that a little oil is normal but I am losing about 3/4 qt. per tank of gas. Cody told me that the turbo should be covered under warranty but I just want to know what could be causing this before I get a new one and have the same problem. I thought maybe it could be the oil return location on the pan but Cody looked at that and said it was OK. Any other ideas?

Sounds like you got a defective turbo. When you replace it, be sure to clean the oil out of the charge piping and intercooler with a solvent (kerosene, Gunk, Brake cleaner, etc.).

how much smoke are you blowing out of the rear exhaust and how is your cam cover vent plumbed?

If you are blowing out a lot of smoke then it's the seal. If the car is not blowing out ton of smoke and the crank is vented into the intake before th turbo then it could be oil from the cam cover.

If there are a lot of oil then it COULD mean bad new!

The car does blow black/blue smoke when I get on it. Some of this is from runing rich, some oil. The crank is vented via a small K&N style filter on the valve cover.

I know for a fact that it is the seal, I was just wondering if any others had this problem and if it was caused by something or just defective from Garrett?

Also make sure your turbo drain back into the oil pan isn't kinked or something and it flows freely. This could cause leaks and coking over a short time.
