I use 10w40 because having a turbo and hotter oil, you want the oil to stay a little thicker when hot. Hence the w40 instead of w30. Oil pressure will go up slightly also, which is fine.

Is it still reccommended to use 10w40 for a turbo'd car if you live in a cold area like NY in the winter?

10w30 is the same as 10w40 in the cold start viscosity department. The 10 basically represents how thick the oil is cold and going from 10w30 to 10w40 is the same. The w30 or w40 represents the hot viscosity. I definitely wouldn't recommend going to 15w50 or 20w50 for cold areas, but for warmer all year round areas it would probably be fine.
Now if they made a 10w50, that would be the perfect oil IMO for my climate(40 deg to 80 deg weather) and turbo setup.
