I installed it w/ the hole on top recalling from memory, the only way that you can see it makes sense. Defenitely not backwards, usually the pointy part always faces towards the radiator.

My temp gauge sender is actually on the top rad hose. Normally my readings there seem very normal and dont bounce around except for this incident.

I'm going to guess that the stat is not opening as it should.
