Default Temperature Gauge

I have noticed that my temp gauge goes to less than halfway then stops. I thought this was my normal operating range but the other day with the gauge showing as enclosed the my2005 overheated and lost some antifreeze. Is the gauge bad or is there a temp sending unit somewhere under the hood? Would not want to try to replace the gauge but do not want it overheating without any warning. Anyone know? Thanks
Do not yet know what it made it overheat except 100+ degrees and idling too much suppose

Did you see coolant spill out somewhere or was some just missing from the reservoir?

Actually I did not see any steam or overflowing coolant. Just that I noticed the coolant reservoir essentially empty and what appeared to be some dried water spots on the painted piece forward of the radiator.
What are you thinking happened?
Thanks

The thermostat is on the opposite end of the radiator hose. It's not where the hose meets the radiator; but where the hose meets the motor. It's in a thermostat housing.
