Thumbs up Question about Detonation and Spark plugs

At high rpms WOT I hear a very light tinny raspy noise (only sometimes). I am installing a A/F gauge in two weeks, but in the meantime if I pull my plugs can I tell if I have been detonating form the look of them????

I also heard this noise may have something to do with my manual boost controller, maybe the ball inside the thing moving around?

Sounds very faint, but I dont know what detonation sounds like, anyone??????

I hear the noise on occasion, some WOT runs don't hear it, sometimes I do..........

If you even think you're getting det, stay out of vtec. Light det sounds like uncooked rice hitting a piece of tin foil one grain at a time. I would hear just a few pops here and there and thought I was ok. My buddy rode next to me one night, and said it sounded like a machine gun. This car is way too loud in the cabin to let your ears be the only source of det detection.

You can check the plugs for det, proper heat range, all kinds of things. There are plenty of guides on the net on reading plugs. The biggest thing is that you have to kill the engine as soon as you reach the rpm range you're looking to check. Just a second or two of running the engine past that can clean the plugs. Good luck.

Wow, that is exactly what it sounds like. I called my tuner he said I should do one of 3 things.

1) Octane booster
2) Lower boost, due to potential heat soak issues
3)Check the plugs

Ill keep everyone updated

I'm confused here. When I basline dynoed my car, on Greddy basemap, the Tech mentioned that he could hear the car pinging near 8000rpms, or detonation. His advice was to get new spark plugs, or colder plugs.

Now, I noticed you have Greddy Iso 8 plugs. Are these recommended for the Greddy kit? Can someone elaborate more why this happens with me on stock boost/stock plugs vs. JBalls 10psi/Greddy plugs?

Basically, I planned on getting the Greddy plugs or (NGK makes plugs, correct?) , If I then increased the boost to 10psi, I will possibly have to change the plugs again?

Toan is a kick ass tuner, I think the heat may have been causing my detonation, or maybe it was the bootleg gas station I used. Either way I have to change my oil, put in new Greddy ISO 8 Plugs and I am going to try the Octane Booster ( some say its ghetto but my tuner recommended it, so it cant hurt right?

Your plugs will glow, and can burn up, if they are not colder. The electrode and porcelin will be so hot between ignition events, that the plug becomes a detonation source.

I use BKR8EIX (One step colder iridium resistor NGK plug) and LOVE them. They also come pre gapped at .030 so you dont got to do ish to them except verify factory gap and put em in. Oh and I run up to 12 PSI (spiking) and around 10 psi consistent on my Greddy kit with them.
