Default quick question about a downpipe install

I know this is the s2ki forum and all, but from what i've gotten outta my experience here in the last year or so is alot of you are pretty well rounded when it comes to motor work and things of that nature, so im sorta in a dilemma.
My good friend just bought an 03 wrx, only things done to it currently are HKS SSQ BOV, K&N filter, removed resonator and got the elbow connector. Anyways, he just ordered an HKS uppipe and downpipe. Now this is the dilemma.
The other night we installed his downpipe only (the uppipe required more work than we were willing to take on at the time) We did everything by the instructions and put it all back together. We had to bypass the O2 sensor w/a supplied harness and all went well. Anyways, the next morning when he was headed to school he literally got to the bottom of the hill on his street and the motor was idling wierd. no biggie, drove another 100 ft, car shut off on him. He opens the hood and smoke is coming out of his downpipe pretty good (normal after such an install) but what was more concerning was the turbo was smoking even more so than the downpipe.
Any ideas on what could have caused this? The reason i ask is, he bought the extended warranty not even a week ago, and this downpipe voids the warranty, so now he has to tell em what happened and their gonna screw him. Im hoping the solution is minor, but its probably not. I know its his fault w/the void part, but we are seriously confused as to what could have gone wrong. All steps were followed and none skipped.
Any ideas, suggestions or comments would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

maybe you guys bent an oil line? did you guys check the oil connections (feed/return lines)? Smoke from fingerprints won't last very long; sounds oil related.
