HKS air filters
Quick question for anyone who might know......
I have the HKS racing suction kit. The filter it uses can only be described as a cross between an oversized scrubbing pad and bath sponge!. When car was in for some work a while ago one of the engineers suggested that I would not need to replace this..........rather just give it a damn good wash and then re-use.
I had a spare filter and have just installed it. However, thought I'd give washing the old one a go!. I've given it several good washes in hot water and detergent and it seems to have come up OK. It's not clean as new but seems OK.
Question is......is this OK?. Anyone see any major issues with re-using this sort of filter?.

It firstly says it's rubbish for filtering. and it needs a new element as it's not washable.
Had one on my MR2 for a period, and the intake pipe was dusty on the inside. I swapped to Apexi and the pipe was still clean 60k miles later.

Filters are thrown away when their lifetime has expired and are replaced with new filters

Hmm. Thanks Bibbs!. Interesting read!!.
Not impressed with the filtering results!. Problem is........apart from removing the entire racing suction kit I assume that there is nothing I can do with regard to using a different make of filter. Interesting point on the filter itself though........did not realise that it contained some sort of oil which clearly I will have removed via repeated washes with detergent!. I have a new one installed for now but will have to fork out the

I know with K&N you re-buy the oil and then wash and soak them in it. Maybe use that on the HKS?
(the oil being sucked into the intake can cause issues with MAP and AFM's though).
I like HKS kit, and if you are rebuilding your engine every year I don't think it matters. But I'll not use their filters again.

guess you could maybe stick a K&N filter on it. i have one of those and they are re-usable. you can buy a filter cleaning kit which comes with some cleaning fluid and a spray can of oil.

I wash my spoon filter with soapy water, dry it in airing cupboard and then rub a little engine oil onto my hands and kinda massage it into the clean filter... Easy peasy!
Need to do it again really - got a bit dusty from our recent Europe trip.
Whether you can do that to a HKS I have no idea.. sorry.. Is that the round one? Like a mushroom?

You cannot wash HKS filters. They are impregnated with oil and cannot be re-oiled they are designed as a consumable item to be thrown away. On a Racing suction kit it is recommended they are replaced every 2000-3000Km or after every trackday. However this is a little excessive for everyday road use and you could probably get away with changing it every 4000km depending on the conditions you are driving in. They are only

is your spoon filter the yellow plastic type spongey one with bumps on it? That's the one I have and was wondering how to clean it. Mine didn't have any oil in it from new though?? It's quite a free flowing filter. I've been told that it's not suitable for road use as it lets in a lot of crap if used for lots of miles.
