Default quick question about turbo behaviors

so this is the first turbo car/semi-high hp car i've ever had, and just want to make sure everything is normal

so before the turbo is spooling, it drives just like stock, but with a little more power

for the 500-750 rpms that the turbo spools (that you can actually hear it spooling), it seems like power kind of falls off?

and then once it's spooled, it's like you are being pushed by the hand of God

does that sound right? or is there something wrong?

also, the bov only blows off when the turbo is under load? i can't just sit at an idle and make noises? lol

Yes except I don't get any kind of power fall off. It appears you may have your vtec set too low which may cause your problem.

looking at the dyno it doesn't fall off, idk, maybe it's just something mental waiting for the pull

I would just think your feeling the turbo lag under normal driving conditions. The turbo should stay pretty silent in the no-low boost range.

When you rev and don't hear blow off what RPM are you reving to ?

like no boost, normal S but a little more power mode is under 5k, that's when I shift and there's no BOV noise

if I'm full throttle then turbo spool is like 5kish rpms, idk, I thought the lag was anytime before it's spooled?

The lag is the inbetween time when the pedal is pressed and the turbo begins to build boost. Thats just the issue with turbo vs. sc

But you get the massive tq that comes along with that beast!

the bov will only blow off when the turbo is actually spooling. It can go off slightly in a vacuum too. It wont go off just by revving it at idle because there is no load on the engine to spool the turbo with a bigger turbo you will barely even hit boost in 1st gear due to the high gearing and light load on the engine beleive it or not.

As for the lag. Its normal for it to even feel a bit slower than stock before the turbo spools because you are using some energy to turn the turbine wheel, when it spools up you shouldnt be experiencing any drop in power. I would say its in your head for that one.

How much power did you end up making?

You can not spool the turbo without a load on the engine by just reving it, so you wont get any BOV sounds. The only ways to do this is by having the timing retarded quite a bit under free reving conditions and then the engine will get some load and spool the turbo and the BOV will blow off or you could set up a 2 step, which I believe also retards the timing at free reving to get some load on the engine.
