Return Line Question
I tapped the oil pan and after awhile it leaked a bit so I had a bung TIG welded on. This brings about two points...one...unless you're tracking the car and making a bunch of (left?) turns the oil pan is fine...just tap it as high as possible. Two...I don't know about the girdle but the wall of the pan is not very thick so it is much easier to leak from/tap to come loose. Yes I know what I'm doing as I work with these types of fittings everyday, it's just not that secure really to tap that big of a fitting into that thin of metal. Especially aluminum. Not saying it cannot be done, just that I was much more comfortable knowing it's welded on. If it's between tapping the girdle or being able to weld the pan...weld the pan. A new turbo is cheaper than a new motor if the tap comes loose and you loose all your oil!
If you can weld the girdle...than that is the best option but as you said...the girdle is a PITA to get off!
