Default the right clutch for 450whp....

Alright guys, Im gonna be going turbo soon and should be able to eek out around 450whp or so. I know the stock clutch is going to need to be replaced, but what clutch should I use to replace the stocker?

I read that some use the stock disk with an ACT xtreme PP for increased clamping. Now I know this puts a little extra stress on the thrust bearings and the ACT is a VERY stiff pedal but it would be the cheapest alternative. Other than this I really dont know what kinda clutch to use. I really would prefer to stay away from a puck clutch even if its sprung it will still chatter and be an on/off switch. I know this question has been asked before but a search didnt turn up the answers I am looking for. So, whats the best clutch for 450whp thats not a puck? Thanks guys!

the ACT with the oem/street disc does NOT have a "very stiff" petal feel. Its quick but basically feels like a stronger oem clutch system.

Nothing like the on/off puck clutches i have driven in s2000s before.

w/ passman. I got an Ironman 6-puck from Competition Clutches. On/Off switch it is indeed, but I was looking for that. He also right about others not being able to start it if they have never driven a puck clutch before. Sort of a built-in theft-deterent system. It does buzz, even though it is sprung, from 3800-2800RPM. Not any worse than the MY00-01 OEM buzz, though.

In terms of a more powerful OEM feeling disc, I have had Spec Stage 2 or 3 recommended with stock PP. My power level will be comparable to yours.

i hear the ACT extreme PP will give you crank walk from more than one person. inline recommended a competition clutch cause they said they utilize a weaker PP but a better designed disc so that you don't get crank walk with the heavier duty applications and the pedal still feels l ike oem.

I've been running a SPEC Stange 2+ for about 2 years now I guess. It holds absolutely great, never a single hint of slip; but I'm on stock HP so it darn well better do that. Clutch disk is 1 face carbon, 1 face kevlar. Looked like the stranged clutch I had ever seen when I took it out of the box.

But i'm not here to pitch SPEC... I'd rather pitch it out. It's had clutch buzz from day 1. Enough to have me think about retiring it on more than 1 occasion. So if you think you'll avoid buzz just by avoiding puck types, think again.

Side note - I had a 6 puck ACT unsprung (solid) clutch with extreme PP on a LS/VTEC Integra many moons ago. Holy heck that would grab the tires no matter what you did. Good for 500lb/ft IIRC, and the car had maybe 180 . BUT, it never buzzed at all. jwa4378 is right about theft deterrent system; even most of the great drivers I knew stalled it a few times before accepting how agressive it was.

myself and 3 other customers i know have run Hardtopguys setup with the OEM disc/ACT 2600lb pressure plate on forced inducted S2ks and none of us have had any problems, all love the feel, and the cost is very resonable compared to carbon units....i would also recommend haveing the stock rubber line swapped out for a steel-braided one to enhance feel even more(only $20)
