Default Shopping for a clutch, planning to go SC'd in the future. Help Please :)

Hey everyone,

So I bought my car last summer. My mech checked it and said it was solid and clean, but that the stock clutch would need replacing soon. It had 106 k km (70k miles ish?) and was the stock clutch with some AutoX action. Agreed on a price and bought it.

Put it back on the road Monday after a couple drives this month. My plan is to do the clutch now. I did some searching and researching, a number of options, and have read to stay away from some. My mech recommended Exedy stage 3 ($2,400 ouch) and then I see people saying avoid Exedy. I've seen people recommend Clutch Masters, Competition Clutch, etc.

End of the day what I saw most, is going with everything OEM and an ACT HD PP. I haven't really seen anyone go against this option actually, except my mech. They don't specialize in s2000's but do solid work. When I asked for pricing, he said his concern was it not holding boost when I add the SC. I asked in another thread and it was mentioned to post here. What sort of life does this setup yield. I plan on keeping the car 5-6 years, 3-4 will be SC. I put on let's say 8k km a year, so 48k km on the high side. Last think I want to do is a second clutch job in my ownership. I've never had to replace a clutch before, I know how to drive so I'm not worried about me killing it. More it wearing with boost.

Thoughts? Should I just have them do it since they don't specialize in s2ks and likely haven't heard of this setup before? What are people here running? I'm planning on being in the 400whp/260/wtq area and DD the car during the spring/summer/fall. I do plan on some track days if Calgary ever decides to build a track. I'm planning on resurfacing my AP1 flywheel as well.

Thanks everyone, appreciate the input. Want to get this decided so I can have them order parts asap so I can get it installed.

Act clutch with oem friction disc end of story. Your shop has no clue about what is best for this car. This clutch will hold 380 torque which is way more than what you are shooting for. The act clutch will drive like stock.

The engagement will drive like stock, however the pedal is definitely stiffer (regardless of what everyone on here says).

With that said, I DD my car in LA and it's never once bothered me. The setup has proven itself with many, many members so I would see no reason to go with anything else. Competition clutches also tend to lose springs if you search around on these forums a bit. That was enough to scare me away from them.

OEM disk, ACT PP. Pedal is a tad heavier but nothing to worry about. Without a doubt get the clutch replaced and broken in before doing the S/C. Drop a Kraftwerks kit on and be prepared to have your face hurt from smiling so much. Takes the car from being kind of ho-hum to OMG.

Thanks guys. I was thinking to go with what has been proven by those who've used it. Is it what all of you are using?

I would agree with OEM clutch and throwout bearing with ACT PP. I've had the Competition Clutch Stage 2 clutch and PP since 2009 and the first clutch plate failed on me. CC replaced it no charge but if it goes again it will certainly be OEM disc and ACT HDSS PP.

No need to keep searching.

I also have OEM disk, OEM T/O bearing, and ACT HD PP. Done and done!

Surprised at the responses so far, OP? Lol.

At 8k km a year your ACT HD PP w/ OEM disc will likely last as long as you are planning to own the car.
