Hi,

I installed a single spal extreme radiator fan a while ago. But it seems that the original fuse and relay won't work with this fan. I think it needs more amps than the fuse can handle.
When the engine is off, and I manually switch the fan on via my laptop (aem ecu) I do hear the realy clicking... but I think the fuse is allready gone.

What kind of relay and fuse do I need for this fan? And where can I buy one?

SPAL Extremes run off a special HO relay w/ 40 amp fuse (PN: FRH-HO-KIT).

 

spal extreme performance fans need a special high output relay as well as a special harness and fuse kit that lets you wire the fan straight to the battery. You will also need a fan soft start controller to control the fans so that they dont start at 100% power and stall your engine.

Do these fans draw so much amps that it will stall the engine when it comes on?

I have just one 12'' twisted blade fan

 

Two certainly can, the amp inrush is pretty ridiculous. I got a 83F capacitor to compensate. When they turn on it's like gale force winds

 

i also have 2 spal extream fans and they will stall the engine when they kick on from off to full 100% on. You will need either a capacitor or some type of soft start fan controller than do not start the fans at 100% power. I have done both and i recommend the fan controller from www.dccontrol.com This will start the fans at 10% power and will slowly add power as the water temp goes up.

 

Has anyone tried the spal brushless fans? Supposedly they have a soft start built into them. I don't know if they can be controlled by just a relay (on/off), or if they need a pwm signal. But they have been out for a couple years, but I can't find too much info on them.

I would wager that yes, some type of soft start would be needed or at least highly recommended. Using a capacitor may be a better option with just one fan to keep costs a bit more reasonable, though. My dinky normal SPAL fans have a noticeable effect on the idle of the car when they cut on, so I could only imagine the load that these extreme fans put on the engine.
