Default Supercharging AP1 and dealing with emissions

Hey all,

I know this topic has been discussed a great deal, but I still am a little confused as the best route when going FI and dealing with emissions with a 2001 AP1. I have a freshly rebuilt engine with about 5K miles running perfect, ACT PP, and ARP bolts so the car is ready for FI. I live in VA just outside DC so emissions are required every 2 years. I was planning on going with a comptech or SOS SC and at first use the piggy back system that allows for 5-6 PSI without a stand alone system. Like others have said 6 PSI of boost typically isn't enough for very long and most want to closer to 12 (for a little more grunt down low and up top)...at this point the emissions becomes a major problem. What options would be best to avoid having to reverse back to stock engine management with reduced boost levels every 2 years?

Does VA require the ODB2 port to do emissions? I recall some aftermarket ECUs don't have one. Which are you running?

I don't have a stand alone engine management system yet.

OK, you're still NA for now. When is your next e-check due? We're looking at moving to Richmond/Petersburg and I was very happy to note that's not an e-check area.

One problem is all the aftermarket ECUs I've seen are marked "off road use only" (even my Hondata FlashPro) and the super charger probably is as well. Turbocharger requires buggering the car significantly; supercharger is basically bolt on.

Good luck.

I have emissions due in about a year. Bolt on 6 psi with piggy back until the car is of antique status may be my best option.

I'm about 90 miles north of Richmond. That city is growing rapidly and would most likely be a good place to buy some real estate. The comptech SC is carb legal with piggy back so it will pass emissions on its base boost levels of ~6 psi. I'm more concerned with not having the car fully tuned and not running as much boost as I would likely want.

you my friend, are very lucky. ballade sports just figured out how to use a kpro on an ap1 without changing the sensors AND OBDII still works. if i were you, i'd go that route since you haven't gotten any upgrade pieces yet.
you would need injectors, map sensor, kpro, and smaller pulley+belt for 12psi assuming you were going with CT sc.
if you're really worried about not passing smog with the setup above, just put back the stock ecu, injectors, map sensor, pulley and belt and it'll be back to the original kit. at least for CT, you don't need to remove the whole SC to remove just the belt/pulley like vortech
