Laivins Race Cars is prototyping a G-force gearbox, Ford 8.8" IRS diff, Porsche 930 CVs, bombproof driveshaft/axles, etc. Beyond the strength increases described below it dropped my highway cruise to 3050 RPM at 70 MPH, shifts GREAT, should withstand power MUCH better than S2K's design. Also uses readily available parts including this trans. Laivins's bellhousing allows you to drop trans by pulling 4 bolts and a crossmember.

Video from autocross last weekend (in the rain) - car's an SSM 420 RWHP F20C S2000 with more data below. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu15AGcemLg

Andris at Laivins Race Cars http://laivins.com/ worked with Tri-Point for years (still consults for them) and his shop prototyped the solution currently shown at this link: http://picasaweb.google.com/stantaur3/Seve...00_DiffAndTrans

The only remaining Honda parts rearward from the crankshaft bearing are the flywheel bolts and hubs...

Rugged Ford 8.8" IRS diff, Eaton Carbon Clutch LSD Unit, HD Driveshaft & Axles, Porsche 930 CV Joints, Specially Reinforced G-force T-5 trans (with options for synchro or dog-engagement, helical or straight-cut gears, custom ratios). Uses stock S2K flywheel & clutch assembly. Very solid.

The stock S2K trans design has 2nd gear too far away from bearing support, so above 350 RWHP = boom. Not a question of if, but when. Stronger PPG gears helps, but it's still a flawed design past 350 RWHP. The G-Force trans is commonly-used in 500 RWHP Mustangs; plentiful parts. Great customer service too - took <10 days from my order to doorstep. No megabuck PPG gears ordered from 1/2 way around the world / available in batches, when their mood strikes. :-)

8.8" FORD IRS DIFF & AXLES
  • Aluminum Ford 8.8" Diff with 31 Spline Setup (available in most junkyards for $300; minimal weight difference vs. stock iron-housing S2K diff)
  • 5.13:1 Moser Gears (which work perfectly with G-force Road Race 5-speed ratios - see below)
  • Eaton Clutch-type LSD with Carbon Discs (Torsen and cone-type diffs also available - all about 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of Cusco / Kaaz / etc.)
  • Porsche 930 CVs
  • Chrome Moly Axles
  • Custom Brackets to Locate Diff (fuel tank modification required - raise floor of tank to allow clearance as shown in photos)
  • Custom Driveshaft with HD U-Joints
TRANS & BELLHOUSING
  • G-Force 5-Speed (options for straight-cut or helical-cut gears; options for dog-box or synchro; option for final drive) - with 5.13:1 diff you have ~ AP2 gearing & gear splits in 1-4 and go through the traps at 9K RPM ~ 130 MPH depending on tire size in 4th. 5th gear is 2920 RPM at 65 (vs. 3500 at 65 with AP2 gearing in 6th) http://www.gforcetransmissions.com/tran_gt-5.asp
  • Speed Sensor Adapter
  • Custom Bellhousing & Trans Mounts (Adapts G-force Trans; Makes R&R Much Easier if Ever Needed)
  • Custom ACT clutch disc that mates to stock S2K or Comptech flywheel and ACT pressure plate (street version)
  • Custom Pilot Solution - Uses Standard Off-the-shelf Roller Pilot Bearing
  • Tailored MGW Shifter (comes through standard S2000 hole location with S2000 knob)
Will get back to you with more details later. Prototype is in shake-down phase right now, and it's working quite nicely. I went with the helical cut gears and synchro box.

Pricing is TBD for both the trans and the diff kits (and the "flywheel back" bundle). Worth noting that band-aiding the S2K trans with PPG gears cost ~ $8K (for the gears alone when we checked prices). Compared to G-force's box which doesn't flinch at the thought of 3300 lb Mustangs pushing 500 Lb-ft on slicks, I put my money on G-force vs. the PPG parts bin (when PPG makes a batch of them, that is... and keep in mind you're still using a S2K case and bearing/shaft issues if you go that route).

The fuel tank clearancing should be done by a reputable shop based on the kit's measurements, and you'll need to double-check everything since we are talking about fuel. Then again, the FI audience needing this kind of bozoproofing may be considering E85 & fuel-system related upgrades anyway.

Thanks,
Stanford

We are working on a similar setup, only with a Ford 9" and bolt in 4-link and GF5r G-Force.

However, after I made a post similar to yours it was deleted and I was ask to become a sponsor.

Hopefully they'll keep your post active, but I'd bet a mod will jump all over it.

I would be curious to see how you adapted the trans setup? Did you make a motor plate?

Here is our solution currently. Will take at least 1200-1300hp according to G-Force. And we all know how stong the 9" and axles would be.

We debated doing an IRS setup, but this will be much better for what we are doing, drag racing. And overall much stronger.
