Default Valve retainer/spring upgrade

I don't have the extra money to do a complete rebuild should I float a valve. Is spending money on Ti retainers and valve springs insurance money well spent? Or is 9# not enough to worry about?

The goal now is to hit 400rwhp on spray and 9lbs boost. This is only for dyno numbers and then will hopefully be around the 340 rwhp(daily) tuned by an EMS. I am, however, realistic in knowing that I will be tempted to use the spray on occasion.

TIA,
Skip

IMO, you're fine with stock springs and retainers at 9 psi. Plus, if you go Ti, they have to be replaced more frequently (every 20K miles I believe is what was recommended to me).

Liemoanh was running a 9lb pulley with EMS for awhile with 340+hp. Try PM'ng him regarding retainers/springs..

Okay, thanks. What about fatigue on the stockers? I have 56k miles logged right now.

Even without boost, I went with the uprated springs and retainers and found that the engine idled much smoother, with less valvetrain noise, but I also ran tighter valve lash

I adjusted my valves to min specs(.008 and .010 IIRC) some time ago... no reduction in noise.

I don't see how more boost affects your valvetrain unless you're revving higher than the OEM 9K rev limit. The stockers should be fine for the life of the engine, they were designed and tested to do just that.

That's the key and why I'm concerned. An owner in my part of the east coast ran the car to 10k and floated a valve. Bumping it to 9500 was a possibility I was/am willing to explore.

Well, Honda put the rev limit at 9K for a reason, if you plan on taking it much passed there then go ahead and take the plunge. As stated the Ti retainers will wear quite a bit quicker. But if you were turbo you'd be making your 400 WHP on the stock rev limit without the nitrous. I never miss an opportunity... lol
