vortech install question
I am installing a vortech on a 2004 (ap2). I am at the steps of modifying the fuel rail area. I think I got the extra injector installed ok, but the install directions state to drill a .078 (5/64) inch hole into the rear of the stock fuel pressure regulator. They say it allows the regulator to "bypass more fuel due to increased static fuel pressure."
Do I take off the fuel pressure regulator from the rail, and drill the hole in the opening of the regulator where it opens into the fuel rail?? That is what the picture looks like (fig 7-c). I just dont want to make a mistake on the fuel line of the car. It says that MY01-03 owners are also recommended to drill the hole in the rear of the regulator.
any guidance from you vortech guys?
thanks

Good question, im running a 2002 vortech and running very lean, wander if this is why, i do not remember doing anything to the fuel rail or regulator. Hmmmm . Let me look at the manual since i installed mine myself and will get back to u what i see on it. James
Vortech must have changed the install directions from the AP1 kit, My install directions mention nothing about drilling the FPR.
The AP2 kit uses a 5th injector, which is different from the AP1 kit

I was using a blue e-manage with RC 440's.
I sold the SC with the E-manage, then bought the SC back about a year later. Never got around to putting the e-manage and injectors back on. I'm back on the FMU now. It's been fine for street driving, but not continuous WOT.

I see what ur referring to on the manual, mine did not have that information when i did mine but might answer why im running lean, i will call vortech tomorrow myself and let u know what i find out on the modification to the FPR. Good luck, let me know if u find out something first "bigworm"
If I remember correctly the directions instruct you to drillout the fpr on 04 and up models and 03 and below its not required. You can easily access this info. on Vortechs web site, as they have full printable instructions. Just checked the Vortech website and under "Support" all the intructions are available with pictures and you are only required to drill out the fpr on 2004 models only. Good luck
I think I have things figured out now. I checked the MY00-02 manual online with vortech, and they had nothing on any fuel rail modifications(tappping the fuel rail for 5th injector, or drilling the APR).
However, the manual that I have for MY00-05 reads that after they tell you to install the extra injector and drill the FPR, it reads," this step is also recommended for the 2001-2003 model years". Maybe I opened a can of worms for you 01-03 owners( or it could be another typo on their part
)
Now I have a MY04, so I need to drill. I guess turbo guys don't do this because they usually go with a standalone system
My question is, do I drill a .078 hole in the inside of the regulator after I take the FPR off?
I guess this hole stays open to allow more fuel to move through the system. If you then put the FPR back onto the rail, you could not even tell the FPR is modded. Do I have this correct????? I just was worried about drilling holes in my fuel system and leaving them "open". I do not want to make a mistake with the most dangerous part of an engine, the fuel!!
Maybe an AP2 guy like enthralled can chyme in with his two cents.
thanks for the quick replys guys
, I can't wait to join the vortech crew soon.

I asked this question a couple months ago when i was putting my vortech kit in on my 01 but no one answered me. I ended up just drilling it out seeing as it was recommended. All you do is take it off and drill through the back a tiny hole to bypass fuel throug the regulator. Only downfall is you can not go back to a stock setup with the regulator after. I have not gotten my car dyno yet though so i do not have any idea of its affects on the AFR's. I should be getting it on the dyno in the next few weeks and ill let you guys know then. One thing i did notice after doing this is the car takes longer on startups than it did before drilling it.
thanks Dan
i will go drill it now. I just got done tapping the fuel rail for the fifth injector. I really had to drill far into the rail, almost a full inch to get to where the fuel channel is found in the center of the rail.
If we go back to stock, we would just need to buy a new oem FPR, thats all. anyway, who is going back to stock!!
thanks guys
