While working out some of the things that are keeping my car incomplete I decided to take a good look at the intake. I had assumed it was 3-1/2 inches all the way from the filter to the snail. John Z had mentioned it was considerably smaller so I did some measurements while changing out the intake.
The actual Vortech intake is the black elbow inside the blue/red coupler.
Double click the picture for a close up. The Vortech intake narrows down to 3.1 inches.
^ You'd want an ID of at least 3.50" to match the blower inlet. 3.75" is an oddball for aluminum piping so might as well slap on a 4" with a reducer. A composite material would be best to avoid heat transfer.
Like I stated to Phil, the ID of the stock elbow is a bit smaller which in and of itself is not a huge issue, but 4" piping allows you to use a filter with a larger surface area as well.
why not make an airbox or at least a heatshield so you aren't sucking in hot air from the engine bay? I think there is way more to gain there than heat transfer from things that have to touch each other.
I did the ducting while I still had the stock SC airbox. Delta was 2-4*F and probably not worth the hassle of taking off the bumper and relocating the aftercooler reservoir to the other side. I already had the air horn installed from the NA days with an AEM V1 intake so all I really did was just add some ducting.
