Default Vortech leaking impeller seal - 928 seals bad?

I sent my Vortech SC off to be rebuilt by 928 Motorsports during my engine rebuild (new sleeves, pistons, etc). After putting everthing back together, I had a major amounts of oil coming out of the SC impeller seal. So, I replaced the seal with the "improved" 928 double lip seal (no they don't automatically come with the standard rebuild). This did not help. I then increased the SC outlet to 5/8" line & -10AN fittings. I also installed a baffled catch can with the PCV line & front VC vent going to the can & a 5/8" line from the can going to the intake in front of the SC to creat some vacuum. I prefer a closed catch can system so I don't smell oil vapors in the car from my previous open system. We don't have CARB regulations in Oklahoma. I am in the process of getting an 04-05 valve cover so I can hook up a -10 fittings to both stock VC outlets. This might help but I really think my problem is with the 928 impeller seals or possibly a worn impeller shaft at the seal. I would assume 928 would not rebuild the unit if the shaft had wear but maybe it was not noticed.

Has anyone had problems with the 928 seals?

If it's not the seal, is there anything else taht I can do to prevent this problem??

Thanks

I would send it back to 928 with a description of your problem.

I had problems with leaking seals after getting rebuild done at 928. A lot of members have reported problems with 928.

This is bad news for me.

I recently purchased a used Vortech V2 with the 928 impl upgraded and the PO said his leaked too after a rebuild by them. Now I bought it under the assumption that new inner and outer seals would fix this!

Did you replace both seals yet?

Stressin me out man!

What was your solution?

When you say others have reported problems, were they related to leaking seals or something else?

I talked to Carl at 928 after it first started leaking and again after the double lip seal was installed. His response was to focus on crank case pressure. I think my current catch can should be OK as I have both valve cover lines going to the can & I should have a vacuum since my can is pulling from the SC air inlet tube (5/8" line). Just to be sure, I will get the 04-05 VC & run two large lines to the can & maybe bump up the 5/8" line going to the intake with a 3/4" line. However, I still suspect the seal will leak but I could be wrong.
Carl pointed me to this page which has some good info:
ftp://12.234.229.133/installpdf/Curi...er%20Leaks.pdf
The problem is that replacing the seal is not going to be easy (for me anyway). I installed the improved 928 impeller and it was very very tight going on. There is a trick to removing the impeller by heating it up, holding the SC with the impeller facing down and lightly tapping the impeller shaft with a hammer. The impeller shaft has a VERY slight taper and the shock from the light taps will allow it to come off. With the tight clearances of the new impeller, I don't think this method will have a chance & a puller is out of the question. So, I need to do everything on my end to make sure case pressure is not the problem before sending it back to Carl to fix the problem.

Something to consider is that it has nothing to do with 928 seals. In my case, I added a lot more boost & put on a rebuilt SC as part of the process. Maybe it would have leaked anyway. But, if that were the case, then most people running more than 12psi with a Vortech would report problems with this. Humm..

By the way, I did a leak down test and the results were 8%, 4%, 3%,11% warm. Compression was 190, 192, 194, 192 respectively. (I have 10:1 CP pistons which is why my PSI's are lower than typical.)

Not trying to dog 928, but it seems more than a few peeps have had issues after a 928 service/upgrade.

I have the rebuild guide for the vortech. Think that will help? Need a copy?

Thanks for your offer on the rebuild guide but I don't think I want to try to rebuild it now that the new impeller is on. To me, the shaft clearances were way too tight. I only want Carl to attempt to take it off since he made it. I don't want to spend $500+ if I damage it. I like the impeller over the stock one so I don't want to take any risks with it.

^^^ Roger that. I have the guide but will be leaving the actual rebuild up to a professional.
