s2000Junky,
What did you end up doing, to fix your leak?

Thanks
Upgraded to a Novi 1200 and opted to not deal with it or Carl at 928 any further.

After dealing with him for blower service/upgrades and pulleys, I have learned that he is basically a hack with some machine tools, so he can make some money on the side when he isn't racing and working on what he knows, which is his Porsche. He does little research on the equipment we send him to work on and assumes no responsibility or accountability when things go bad. He expects you to be the expert, knowing all the bearing, seals, shaft diameters etc for him to work on because he wont check/verify them. For example, if you asked him what the shaft diameter is on your Novi 1000 so you could buy one of his pulleys, he wouldn't be able to tell you (well he might now since I educated and scolded him after sending me the wrong part that he doesn't apparently make) So you need to research what that is through some other vender or resource. That's real assuring when he is rebuilding your $2000 blower
...Nope he still doesnt know what size pulleys fit! I just called him the other day searching for the same information and he just wanted to talk to me like Im an idiot and say, you didnt pull the pulley off and measure it already? Not the company for my business either.

Well there you go! He copped an attitude with me when I called him on this and I didn't appreciate that either, just made me even more frustrated and angry. He of course charged me a re stocking fee and then I had to get my pulley somewhere else because he didn't stock it even though his wife said "sure we have that Novi 1000 pulleys in stock".

Also for future reference you can also get the PTFE / Viton hybrid seal OR the original OEM style face seal / impeller shaft seal for NOVI's and Vortech from http://www.superchargerrebuild.com/paxton/
They have always been very helpful and usually have better pricing too...

Vortech said the gearcase was questionable as the bearings were not tight in the case
That is very telling. If the case is not holding the bearings in location, the bearings are allowed to move. If the bearings are allowed to move, the shaft is allowed to move. If the shaft moves very much, the shaft seal will loose contact with the shaft and the leak begins. Obviously, a shaft seal must be in contact with the shaft in order to seal. Vortech OEM uses a face seal instead of a shaft seal - and a face seal has more tolerance for shaft movement and still is able to seal. That said; the Vortech face seal has quite a history of weeping and leaking - it is not a perfect solution either.

He expects you to be the expert, knowing all the bearing, seals, shaft diameters etc for him to work on because he wont check/verify them. For example, if you asked him what the shaft diameter is on your Novi 1000 so you could buy one of his pulleys, he wouldn't be able to tell you
Yep. We actually have a chart we maintain on as many superchargers and models as we can internally, and what should be inside them, what their shaft size should be, and so on. And once-upon-a-time we also thought we knew what size shaft a Novi 1000 had so we could just ship a pulley out.

But now we know more. And that some supercharger models (the Novi 1000 is a perfect example) have been made for so long, and have been changed/upgraded/improved by the manufacturer so many times that we cannot be certain what a customer's got until we see it. Some of the blowers we work on are very old and quite literally "off the charts". Others (like Vortech's) have so many trim models and new iterations they are hard to track because of the frequency of new changes. Another example: pulley shaft size. Rather than assume a shaft size and ship the wrong pulley we ask the customer to please measure their input shaft so we can send the right on the first try. Digital calipers are about $19 and a good item to have in your tool box.

Road Racer,

if this is the SC that came on your car,

It was rebuilt by Vortech 2006. That Supercharger kit has been installed on my car 2 times, and 2 other cars. I epoxied in the -10AN fittings in 2003.

It used to look like this:

3rd car it was on:

Slows2k,
Thanks for the history! That is very cool. I knew you had done work on this car when it was owned by Brad. Brad sold it to a guy in OK and I bought it from him. I replaced the SC last year after all the issues from 928. If there really was an issue with the tightness of the bearings in the housing, it would have been nice for 928 to have checked that during the rebuild. Oh well. Water under the bridge on that.

So far, no issues with the new Vortech SC. Pushing around 400hp to the wheels and everything is running good except for an erratic idle problem I can't resolve (its not the IAC (new), MAP, or alternator - wants to die with electrical load - PM me if you have thoughts).

Having a blast doing AX's and organized drives such as the Boston Mountains Tour (Arkansas) which was this last weekend.

Thanks again!
Chris
