Default What is the best head gasket at the moment?

It's been a while since I was active on this forum/section. There have been some really awesome builds, powerful engines and sensational drag times since.

I had this stroker kit for a while now. The bore is 89.5mm. I initially had the ARP head studs and my first head gasket leaked. I o-ringed the head and changed it to a different brand; a 50 thou SCE copper racing hg http://www.scegaskets.com/Honda/F20C...orLanding/true
We tensioned the head bolts a few times and this seemed to held together with the run in tune ok.

I have been really busy with work so there has not been a need to wine up the boost and give it a bit more the past few years.

However, over the next 2 weeks I will be preparing the car for www.worldtimeattack.com.au. I will change the head studs to the larger fullblown studs with some bigger injectors, E85, a little bit more boost and dyno time

I am hoping to order a spare head gasket just in case my current one fail. What have you guys used that works for larger bore f20c?

i was gonna say stock but your not stock bore. whatever HG you get, as long as you get stock thickness i think your fine. thats a big ass bore rofl. im of the thinking, go stock bore, that way when you destroy it you can bore to 88 or 89 and salvage it before resleeving.

Yes it was a bit greedy to go that far but when my engine let go it's usually very messy.
My last one, the valve snapped and totalled everything. However that engine had a hard life.
There has not been much second chance so I thought "Go hard of go home" with this rebuild

Hopefully there is a good head gasket otherwise I will just get another block, sleeves and pistons....and use smaller bore. This current block will then be useful for NA application.

Lookup Race Engineering. Raceeng.com, you will have to call them and they can get exactly what you should be looking for. Its been a while since I've ordered any off the wall gaskets from them but they could usually always help me out. They deal in cometic gaskets too.

If you need custom bored OEM head gaskets, Golden Eagle Manufacturing does them. Hit them up and see if they can get you an OEM Honda one bored to your size.

Have you done anything with the head? since the stock chambers are recessed and have an 86.5mm bore there are a few things you can do to make it work a little better.

do the pistons come out of the block 1mm like stock or are they flush?

since you have an 89.5mm motor I'd mill the head down to the quench pads and use the gasket that gets you proper 0.030" piston-head clearance (if the piston comes out 1mm then you'll need a 0.070" gasket, if its flush w/the deck a 0.030 gasket will do.)

This will get rid of the sharp edge all the way around the chamber and help the head flow a little better. then you can round off the remaining edge of the chamber and blend it into the bore. You'd be amazed as how doing those few things can keep hotspots from forming and stop detonation and pre-ignition before they start.

If it leaks, then I will order a head from the US so that I can use a OEM 90mm, 28-30 thous head gasket. This current head can be used for a different block. Thanks for the idea wadzii. It will cost me more to get what you describe over here wadzii and there are only a handful of people that can do such thing

BTW who do you recommend for such head work in the US?

Any machine shop that can resurface a head can do the work I described.. milling cylinder heads is easy and common.. you really should be resurfacing the head whenever you change the head gasket.


I use RLZ engineering for all of my head work. You wont find anyone that does better work anywhere. They are a giant pain in the ass to contact at times since its a 2 man show and they spend all their time in the shop, not the office, but they are fairly local to me so I just go down there.
