What did FI do to your insurance
Hi All,
I've been considering an FI kit and am about to pull the trigger. One thing that just occurred to me is insurance. Do you normally report the change to your auto insurance provider? For those of you that did, how did they react? I definitely want to be honest because insurance is not something to play around with, but I'm not even sure how to approach the subject without sounding like a teen street racer. I want the mod for controlled driving in safe environments, but I'm guessing when they hear "I'm adding a super/turbo charger" all they are going to think is the worst.
Just curious what you all did. Thanks!

I am actually in the middle of this with my insurance company. I want to insure all of my after market parts because I have about 12K into my car. The main reason for the extra coverage for me is for theft protection. I have a clean driving record not even a parking ticket and I went and sat down with my insurance agent and told him my situation and all I had to do was show receipts for all of the after market items. The next step for me is he will come to my house once my car in finished and make sure that all the parts receipts I had are actually on my car. Our insurance agent is a family friend so he said that he will look into the best way to raise my coverage without changing my premium too much. By the way my insurance is though Allstate and they are good about "specialty" type coverage. I have a 71 MGB covered though Allstate and every 2 years it gets reappraised and covered by them. With Allstate you can do the extra insurance but how it turns out depends on how you and your agent handle it. My agent is covering the extra parts not the extra horsepower.
i am going to offer my nonprofessional advice here. this is just what i have heard, been told, understood, believe it to be stuff.
you have 12k into your car. HOWEVER, if you replaced stock parts with your aftermarket parts, you did not improve the vehicle 12k. better explanation, if you take the stock wheels off, which from dealer are like 400 a peice, then tires are like 150 each, total bill about 2200, and slap on volks for 2800, then you only improved your car by 600 dollars.
if your car was stolen, you would get 600 additional dollars from your aftermarket insurance coverage. i have the same problem as you and feel your pain.
bottom line, if the car is a pleasure, weekend, car club cruiser and not your daily, look into haggerty insurance, funny enough, i am too as this is more there thing.
currently, i have progressive insurance, and they allow you to set a value for your car, or aftermarket additional coverage up to 5k. i chose to set the value at 30 grand. i told progressive, my car in a total loss is worth 30 grand, and charge me accordingly for comprehensive/collision coverage.
you can choose to do up to 5 grand in aftermarket coverage, but as i explained earlier, its only 5 grand over the cost of the stock parts you remove, if you did. now having a 5 grand turbo charger added to the car is tech a 5 grand improvement. EDITED its 5 grand less the header you take off, if you get a very picky insurance adjuster.
however, the real battle begins when your shit gets jacked. total loss means the insurance company is gonna wanna pay jack shit for it. so even though i pay for 30k coverage, i know i will have to fight for every penny. same goes for you.
so bottom line, yes, i would add coverage to your vehicle, but remember, its improvement coverage <IE new part minus cost of new stock part equals my added coverage, not what did i spend on new parts coverage.
haggerty is totally different ballgame. its more what is the car worth with that shit on it coverage
, but there are use restrictions!
good luck.

I told my insurance company everything I did to my car. They increased my rate (and my coverage) based on the cost of my mods not the extra power they produce. Probably their bad...but they can't say I didn't tell them- not to mention the S2k is already classified at a very "high risk" level because it's a roadster.
A friend of mine did the same thing and got his mods included in his coverage. Keep your receipts and you should be able to insure your car at closer to its replacement value.

Wow, so much bad information.
First of all if you want extra coverage then you need to discuss this with your insurance company.
You can get additional coverage for your vehicle up to XX value optionally you can get a stated value policy which is what many enthusiasts purchase.
I am not sure why everyone is so scared to tell their insurance company that you have aftermarket parts, unless you are a real dumbass and tell them you now race it.
