people like the ap2's cause the slightly larger displacement is better to boost.

Well a good car and in good shape with lower miles first off either ap1 or ap2. But AP2's seem to make a bit more power when boosted. I would not sweat it, just the newer models ap2 have other issues you have to consider so most people stay with 04-05 for the ap2. You may want to figure out what kit you want to run first.

I would stay away from DBW imo.
I see alot of ppl making crazy power on AP1's (00-03) but I prefer larger displacement AP2 (04-05). Either way you go there both really good for boost.

DBW doesn't really affect anything. Most people havn't driven a 06+. The DBW is not that noticeable. I barely can notice it.

Id go 04+.

06-07 has the cheapest worthwhile engine management that is coming out nov. 9. $700 for the flashpro. tune right off of your stock ecu.

your also limited to about 450-500 whp on the 06+.

Also VSA is GREAT for boosted S's. When your DDing the car sometimes you dont notice the extra power and without vsa it can really surprise you. VSA can save you. you dont want to have a wrecked boosted S.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd want an 04-05

The ability to just reflash the ECU on the 06+ is a huge benefit. Almost every new car, if not every new car, is DBW. It's really not that big of a deal. VSA can be a benefit.

For me personally, 06+ was out of my price range. I got a great deal on a 2005 though. I would suggest 04+ as they have the 2.2L.
