Take both! Carry and use whichever one would be appropriate... Sometimes you'll wish you had a small camera (e.g. going out at night), and other times you'll be glad you have the big one (e.g. Eiffel tower).

Also, I didn't have any problems in Paris. It was Rome where someone tried to pickpocket me (unsuccessfully).

If you've got the skills and desire to get artsy with your shots, go with the DSLR. If you just want some pix to remember the trip a 3mp pocket digicam will be fine.

Tip: the Eiffel Tower is huge, a wide angle lens really helps.

On a side note, I will never travel to France again, nor take Air France ever again. Based on a couple of experiences in France, rumors that the French hate Americans (or non-French) are, to me, well founded.

Get a 5$ disposable and scan the pics

You lose the camera no big deal.

I would go for the best camera you can and buy 4x the memory cards that you think you'll need. Sell them on eBay when you get home if you no longer need them. I filled up 512mb of cards with my Canon G2 in 2.5 weeks in Europe. The only thing I wished for was a 2nd battery (mine lasted about 6 hours, but that's not good enough in spectaular Europe) and more memory cards.

You can see some of my pictures here:
