Ferrari...
The 348 is not so fast for a Ferrari. I think the S2k has a chance against a 348.
A 355, however, is a totally different beast. Stock S2k will get annihilated by the 355. If I remember correctly, the V8 on the 355 redlines around 8500?? Might not be 9000 rpm, but it has 4 more cylinders.

a friend of mine walked away from a 348 pretty well in his MR2 (which runs 13.2) I would expect the S2000 to hold it's own for a little bit, and slowly lose more and more distance to the 348
DJSang,

Now, though I love my S2k, I would swap it tomorrow for a 355 Spider, which has 112hp per litre (I think) which makes it not far short of 400 hp. For handling, it has underbody aerodynamics, computer controlled suspension, blah, blah.
I've found through experience that the best way to beat an Italian dynamo is by getting the driver overexcited. If you make him hit his redlines, chances are he'll screw up his engine and poop out before you reach a quarter mile. I took out two Diablos with my BMW M Coupe that way
Now granted, a Ferrari is a more reliable car than a Diablo, but my anecdote still applies in a way..... don't forget the psychology of street racing.
Nevertheless - down to specs. I love the 355 - sick handling and decent linear acceleration - forget ever taking one in an s2k. When I saw them deface a 355 with a Toyota Supra in "Fast and Furious" I was tempted to walk out. That is one hell of a work of engineering. The 348 (Berlinetta?) was a pretty sorry Ferrari. It was their "discount" car. When they replaced it with the 355, the auto world went wild, buzzing about what an amazing improvement it was.
Tell your friend that if he wants to test your s2k against a ferrari, to bring a real ferrari to the table! He might as well be racing you in a Dino

Chris S can vouch for 348's performance better than most - he's got an S2000 and has driven his neighbor's 1990 348. While the 348's are great cars, they are also not built for drag racing - nor is any Ferrari. Yes, they can do it, but if someone with a Ferrari is drag racing you, he's obviously a new owner.
I believe that the 355s redline at 8k, and the new modenas redline at 8500, WOW! Not too far from our cars.

A race between the 348 and the S2000 is all driver. A quick shifter and good launcher in a S2000 with without a doubt beat the 348, but if you kept going, the 348 will eventually blow by you. Top end is Ferrari! The 348 is not the easiest car to shift. It paushes before letting you enter the next gear and you really don't want to "bang gears" when you drive it because it feels like that thin shifter bends.
