Default mud flaps? on some s2k's?

hi everyone, i plan on getting a 02' s2k soon. and i was just wondering if those mud flap looking things are standard and what they are called? i see them on some of the s2k's and some i dont. let me know if they are extra. kinda curious. it looks like something that helps to protect your car paint as you go through water. well...let me know if any of you do!

You mean those black pieces of plastic that hang in front of each wheel? Those come with the car. They're aerodynamic aids. "Strake" is the name, I believe.

they go in front of the rear tire... on the feder.
Yeah, but I would't classify those as "mud flaps" - it's probably the air deflectors in front of the tires. We just recently had a discussion about these in the S2000 talk forum and it seems as though some people have them and some don't. I do and they scrape on my driveway regularly (and my driveway is not that steep).

On the MR2, they are called "spats", and (according to the Toyota write-up), are supposed to deflect airflow away from the wheels and general area of the wheel arch; this helps minimize drag caused by air turbulence. The secondary purpose is to deflect potential objects away from the wheels and wheel arch. The overall effect of these flaps is to ensure that the front of the car stays firmly planted on the road surface.

I believe they are supposed to be standard on all S2Ks, and should be installed when the car is being prepped by the dealer. Sometimes, they forget to put them on.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether in deflecting the air from the tires, they also deflect cooling air from the brakes? If so, is the trade-off worth it?

For some reason, the air strakes in front of the tires seem not to be on the MY2001 cars. At the last WestLA meet, all the MY2000 had the air strakes on, but the MY2001 didn't.

yeah... he's talking about the air dam/ strakes
i didn't have those on my 2001.
but i bought it from a dealer parts shop.
remember them being pretty cheap and easy to put it on.

oh, and... did you check the rear ones?
there are rear trakes too.
in front of rear wheels.
actually, 4 to be exact.
2 in front of each rear wheels.
chances are, if you don't have front ones, you are missing
two of 4 rear ones, too.

no- i don't think he's talking about side strakes...
it's not mud flab either...
it's called air dams/ strakes...

here are the parts #, and required bolts/ nuts...

yeah... i posted a thread about this black strakes front and rear
a while ago, because my 2001 s2000 didn't come with them.
apparently, those are parts that dealers have to install as
they take spring spacers out when they get s2000s delieverd.
some dealers don't do this, as a lot of them don't even know about this parts (like mine). when i asked about these parts to my dealers, and many other dealers around my area, (RI) they kept telling me that i was talking about $350 something side strakes. i ended up doing a lot of research and bought these parts off the internet. i'll try to take some pics and tell you guys what it is. if you still don't know what i'm talking about, that is.
