Looks like you're off to a good start. You seem to already know rule number one, which is "make your subject big". Or said another way, "fill the picture area with the subject".

The next thing I would work on is to take a look at the background before you press the shutter. Our visual system is great at filtering out distracting background elements, so it's easy to miss these things at the time. Then later, when you look at the resulting image, you're like "where did that telephone pole come from?" In a couple of your shoe photos, the white plastic chair is a bit distracting. And in the first dog photo (which is quite good, btw), the bright sunlight and the purple whatever (Frisbee?) are also somewhat distracting.

Basically, you don't want anything competing with what you are trying to show the viewer.

wow thanks a lot for the tips guys. UNC04SuzukaBlue seems to know his stuff. i took those pictures the night i got the camera. was too excited to really care about the bg. i know its something i must look into in the near future. those tips are pretty handy. and i went back to ritz and picked up a cokin adapter, filter holder, a gray gradation filter, also bought a 62mm circular polarizer for the 70-300mm lens, and i got a uv haze filter for the 18-55mm lens for free. cant wait to try them out in the day. thanks again guys.

Lenses are extremely important. Spend a lot of time researching before you buy them.

The 430 will more than suit your needs. The 580's longer throw is nice, but all the other features are a bit unneccessary. I've shot with both...they both perform nice.

Make sure to do a firmware update if your camera's not up to date, esp with the flash.
