Dont these cars split in half for servicing as well. The whole rear clip comes apart to get at certain parts.
TunerJetta: I agree with you the main cockpit area should have been reinforced like you said so I have no clue to its whereabouts. The other site claimed the driver died (understandably).
I was doing more to explain the shattered appearance of everything in general, but yes F1 and most other race formats have driver pod of sorts and this car looks to be designed in a way that it should have had some kind of protection like as well.

Perhaps he swerved out of the way of the smaller tire that was already in his path. The abrupt inputs then unsettled the car with the driver being unable to save it. 
Also, there seems to be a gradual incline/cresting just before the evident loss of control. Maybe at the speed of 157mph, he may have just finished cresting- making the car a little less planted- right as he tried some evasive maneuver.
