Are 255/40/17 tires taller or larger in diameter (not width), than 245/40/17? i read something here that said yes? if so wouldn't having a 255/40/17 tire affect gearing = slow the car down? Even if the RPF1s are lighter than stock?

Yes, but it's a very small difference and it won't have a noticable effect on gearing. CR comes stock with a 255/40 rear.

A 9" weighs about 1/2 lb more than a 8", again not enough to worry about. IMO yes it does look much better, mainly because the spoke face is completely different. eg2solsi500 already regrets getting the 8" front.

A 255/40 will always be taller than a 245/40 no matter what size wheel it's going on. Doesn't matter whether it's a 17, 18, or 19" wheel.

255 is the width and 40 is the aspect ratio so the sidewall height for that particular tire is 40% of 255. For a 245/40 the sidewall is 40% of 245. It's always going to be a smaller number and therefore will never been taller.

Maybe you got confused and saw someone mention a 245/45/17. Now that IS a taller tire than a 255/40.
