A good way to learn to do stuff is take a picture of your car and learn to change the appearance of it. Learn to use the blur tool, the magic wand, smudge, etc...

I've learned anything I know about photoshop by literally just messing around with it.

The best way to learn is to jsut screw around with pictures you have or take. Mistakes lead to learning something new and how some of the tools work and stuff. Just have fun and do whatevers, thats the best way imho.

Wanabe,
Get Photoshop Album to go along with Photoshop 7. It is by far the best program to catalog your photos I've ever used. I agree the best way to get started with Photoshop is to play with it. After you feel comfortable with it then read the how-to manuals. They will make a lot more sense!

Imageready is a web graphics program. I haven't used it yet. Photoshop album allows you to easily keep track of all your photos and has nice simple image enhancement features (levels, color, contrast, red eye removal) built in. Some of the features, such as red eye removal, are much simpler to do in Photoshop Album than in Photoshop. Photoshop Album is also very inexpensive!

You should just watch a few of the tutorials, they will help you get familiar with the tools and what they do....
