Can't agree more... I started like 5 years ago with a program called "Picture publisher" by micrografx. I eventually worked my way up to photoshop, and now do it as part of my occupation.

www.adobe.com

go to their products section and find the learning database or something like that.

I used it when I learned editing with premiere it is actually fairly helpful and free (there's registering and crap but it's painless).

Or take a class, you'll learn a lot more that way.

When I started learning Photoshop, I went to a bookstore and bought the cheapest ($10) book I could find on it. I did work through many of their examples, but eventually forgot them and relearned them on my own. The important thing the book gave me was an insight on the two most important concepts in Photoshop: Selecting and Layers. Just learning the basics of those two concepts allows you to figure out heaps of other stuff by yourself. Once you know that something is possible, you can forget it for a long time, and then find it again later when you need it.

BTW, I use ImageReady all the time. The image in my sig below was optimized in ImageReady. If I had saved it as a jpeg in Photoshop, it would have been about 40K. Optimized in ImageReady, and it's 11K with no discernable difference in quality.

I just spent 50 dollars on a book that teaches some pretty nice photoshop features, You could spend years learning things on this program so just jump into it and goodluck. The channels and paths are your good friends once you learn to use them. Try not to over kill using the filters either, time and place to use everything the program has. There should be some online tutorials to show you things too. I learn something new almost every day, and if you have friends with photoshop try to share things that you learn from each other.

Pick up a book called Adobe Photoshop: Classroom In a Book. I highly recommend it.

I agree with Dark_Sub_Rosa. I hardly ever use the stock filters, except the most subtle ones. If you overdo it, your images will look like everything else on the web.
