I was just thinking... the amount of stress that those wheels absorb during hard driving is definitely what causes those things to get so hot. Just like when you bend a small piece of metal... it absorbs all the energy exerted on it and gets really hot, especially on the area where it deforms the most.

The wheels won't deform enough to generate any noticeable heat, especially alloys. The tires do almost all the deformation and once they get to their limit of adhesion, they begin to loose traction and do not stress the wheel any further. If you had a wheel deforming enough to generate a measurable amount of heat you'd probably have alignment issues. The wheels are most likely warm from the brakes, they just don't cool down as quickly as the rotors.
And the tires do deform to dissipate some of the energy, but the wheel is used as the connection point between the tire and the car so that the car doesn't go flying off the road.
