I keep meaning to do some HDR shots of my car. This isn't a hard technique at all. Most likely he used Photomatix because PS doesn't do HDR very well. I like HDR, they look cool.

Amazing shots - obviously HDR but that doesn't detract from the choice of location or the setting up of the shot. You can only polish a turd so much, so it's better to not start with a turd.
