No, if you don't have serious upgrades, it is a step down because you lose back pressure. You also happen to get worse gas mileage in some cases.
Since you lose back pressure, exhaust can actually leak back in to the cylinder while the exhaust valve is still open.

Absolutely wrong! You will not lose power if you disconnect the exhaust.
