So if I leave my top down...
Why do you think leaving your top down will help anything except sun damage?
In my miata I usually leave the top up when parking, but I leave the doors unlocked.
I hardly ever park in busy areas as to avoid door dings, but I think this way I will not have to worry about somebody wanting to steal my radio, then finding that the doors are locked and continuing their expedition by cutting my 300 dollar roof or smashing my window in.
Theft is just a fact of life with a car that is only as strong as the cloth top.
Sad to see though, good luck to the owner with finding a replacement.

I watched my cousin get into my car in about 5min with a coat hanger yesterday after I locked my keys in it. It's not like he is a professional locksmith or anything either. It was really surprising how easy it is to break into our cars.
