I just purchased a Canon Rebel XT used for a little over $400 shipped with a pretty good 50mm f/1.8 lens, memory card, and battery/charger/software/cables/etc. The Rebel XT is pretty much the cheapest good digital SLR out there IMO, so I'd look for one of those. Check out Photography on the Net for sale threads, there are some good deals on lightly used Canon DSLRs and gear there.

A disposable 35mm can take excellent pictures if the person behind it knows what they're doing....

I'd really reccomend a Nikon D40. You can get them for under 500 bucks with a very solid 18-55mm kit lens. They're light, fast, user friendly, and more than capable enough.

The D200 that AP-ONE reccomended is also a good camera, but it might be a bit much. See if you like having a DSLR before you blow a grand or two on a good system.

Check out this review, convinced me to buy mine. :-)

Say no to Ken Rockwell. Please... I swear...he has no idea what he's doing.
www.bythom.com is a much better site.

But I do agree, that the D40 is a great starter camera. If you want to start out f20milo, check out the Nikon D40 or the Canon Rebel XTi. Both are beginner DSLRs, and can be had for cheap. Pick up the one that feels the best, is comfortable in your hands, and run thru the menus. Because if you're wasting time going thru the menus and an awesome shot comes up, you're liable to miss the shot...a camera should *always* be ready for a shot.

Down the line, you'll pick up more lenses naturally -- but for now, to get really good, you just need something to start shooting with. Put it in Manual mode, and start shooting
