More air under the wing is good. Although some down force is created by redirecting the air and pushing it upwards most if created by the pressure difference between the top and the bottom of the wing. More air under = faster velocity = lower pressure, while above the wing has higher pressure. And since everything goes from high to low the wing wants to be pushed down.
