Can the silver trim ring that surrounds the shifter be replaced or do you have to replace the whole console? I was also thinking about removing the ring and refinishing it but wasn't sure if it can be popped off.
Not my console above.
Console shows as one (1) part number on the parts lists. 00-03 all the same. The ring will likely come off with care but there's no part number for it I can find. Last made 19 years ago...
I'd pull the console and see what it looks like underneath.
I should have searched here first. I found that a lot of people just used a cotton ball and alcohol to remove the coating to reveal chrome. It looks like you can separate them but you have to pull the console and melt plastic rivets to do so. I'm going to try the alcohol method first knowing I can repaint it if I really have to.
Yes it comes off, there are clips all around it. I removed mine, sanded it down and wrapped it. The two plastic rivets you can drill the tops off, and the clips are strong enough to hold the trim back down without them being there.
I lightly sanded mine down and sprayed it with gloss black paint.
That looks slick, well done! I really need to do this to mine. Did you take the piece out or just tape it off really good? Trying to take the piece out has proved fruitless for me, she's really in there!
It's funny. I carved out some time today to remove my center console and do a little makeover. Was going to swap to an AP2 setup and install an ASM shift knob I bought in Japan and Renegade shift boot.
As luck would have it, I found this thread, spent a whopping 5 minutes and used the rubbing alcohol. Blown away by the results. Mine was so gross. Didn't disassemble or anything.
I disassembled mine and wrapped it in satin black wrap. Was my first time wrapping anything and it wasn't too difficult. It is fortunately a very low risk project since you are using such a small amount of material. Can rip and replace as many times as you need until you are happy. And I actually got the material for free from a local shop from their scrap pile. I borrowed the wrap idea from a former forum member who sold his car here...pics are here: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/cars-sal...900-a-1201098/
