Default DIY: Painting Shift Boot Holder

Just finished painting the plastic that holds the shift boot with really good results. So if the paint around your shift boot is chipping and you want to do something about it, this DIY is for you. Keep in mind that it's not a perfect match but it looks way better than chipped paint. Also, spray painting takes a little practice to get it right. Practice spray painting something to get the feel for it if you have to.

Removing the center console is pretty straight forward. You can follow this DIY: http://www.redlinegoods.com/S2000install.php

To remove the shift boot holder, remove all the screws holding it in and pop the tabs out. Towards the middle of the holder, underneath, some models may have two screws, some models have it glued in. I had it glued in. To remove it you just have to drill it out. Of course, be careful not to drill all the way through the holder. I circled it in the picture below so you know what I'm talking about.

Materials: (SEE PICTURE)

Before:

Step 1: Sand down any cracks and chips so that it's smooth. I'm not sure what grit sand paper I used since the block wasn't labeled, but I think it's like 300-400 grit. I used the nail file for really deep scratches. Sanding also helps the paint adhere.

Step 2: Spray painting. If you need tutorials on proper techniques on spray painting, youtube is your friend.

Step 3: Reinstall and enjoy your refurbished shift boot holder.

**** UPDATE ****

This paint sucks... it chips really easily and my bracelet scratches the shit out of it. My window tinting cousin guy is going to wrap it in vinyl. I'll post pics when he's done.

The cf looks great, but i'm not at all surprised that the silver chipped. I'm surprised it didn't chip with the reinstall. Definitely needed some type of clear coat protection. If you had used a matte clear on top of that silver base it would've had the same satin finish but without the annoying chipping.

Yeah... I learned that. Even after I redid it with Primer, paint and several layers of clear coat it didn't seem hard enough to resist scratching. Seems like wrapping it was the best thing to do to begin with.

He used vehicle wrap which stands up better to abuse.

He more than likely did not.

As an alternative, I remember reading somewhere of people rubbing it down with rubbing alcohol. The result is that you still have real shiny shift boot holder. I did that to mine and it turned out really well.

I used plexi-dip on mine, the texture looks almost identical to the rest of the center console.
