So after 136k my steering wheel is showing a bit of wear. I actually thought it was maybe gunk built up so I tried scrubbing it, unfortunately the finish is peeling and scrubbing only made things worse . The wheel doesn't look bad I am just afraid it will dry out in its unprotected state. Any ideas how I can fix this myself? Not looking for perfect.

Not easy by yourself. I had mine re-leather (sorry, I don't know how it's said) for about 150$ and it looks perfect now.
