I know there's supposed to be a nut there to loosen. I asked the previous owner if he glued it on and he's under the impression I should just be able to loosen the nut and unscrew it. am I missing something?

it looks like you are missing the locking nut...but you should be able to twist it off unless it's like you suspected that it's glued on, then it'll be harder to take it off

If you suspect its glued on, try and find a sprayable adhesive remover, try and get it in there and give it a twist see if that helps. If its loctite or some sort of super glue you could just use acetone (nail polish remover) to get it off.

I may be mistaken but I don't think much harm can come from twisting the knob off and it not budging initially.

You just give it a hard twist.

Since the lock nut is missing Loctite was probably used. Good luck with it. Hopefully you don't need to heat it.

The prior owner really doesn't recall? It would help to know exactly what was used.

I used PB Blast for rusted nuts. If your trying to salvage the knob, use something to wrap the knob with and a vice grip to give you more leverage.

I honestly dont think he glued it. He removed an aftermarket knob and put on the stock knob literally a day before I got it. I doubt he forgot if he glued it. It's entirely possible that he just tightened it down a lot and I'm just worrying about breaking a linkage or something if I twist too hard but what's throwing me off is that when I asked him he replied "loosen the nut and twist it" (yes that's what she said).
